I'm trying to think of what to say in my client's site's footers to prompt people to download firefox. Don't want to have a novel or rant at the bottom of every page! Heres my best effort so far:
Site by <a href='http://www.reverbstudios.ie' title='Reverb Studios Multimedia and Web Site Design Leitrim Ireland' target='_blank'>Reverb Web Design</a> | Best viewed in <a href='http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/' title='Download the FREE Firefox Browser' target='_blank'>Firefox</a>
Any thoughts!?

i think its good as it is, simple and to the point. On the other hand, I would not recommend a special browser, rather use "Not recommended for IE6" or "This site does not support IE6" and link to FF :-) You might get some interesting SEO effect, as this is an up-to-date topic ... and in addition you could support the ie6 boycott

Yeh but that will lead to more text and wont be an obvious solution for the viewer. No point just telling them the site doesn't support IE6 and have them wondering what the link is for..

If you really want to annoy people - you can put browser detection and yes/no javascript alert. "Your browser is outdated. Would you like to find out about upgrade options?"

yes, cool idea ... make it a confirm box with "Do you want to upgrade now?!", that loops when you click no .... hehehe ...

"Best viewed in" is just.... ughhh. Make it work in IE6, make it rock in Firefox, and let Firefox worry about marketing their browser.

What do you guys think of this?

Sites encouraging their IE 6 users to upgrade.
I agree you're site should work in IE6 (and pretty much any browser), but I try to spend very little time making it look identical in IE6.
03 Mar 18:07
Yes it should WORK, thats ok, but i wont spend time on it looking nice, offering a text-only version as fall-back... we have to get rid of this s**t browser ... its 8yrs old, thats nearly half of the lifetime of the www

Yes Darragh! That's the way ...

I had a script installed on my own site a while back from a site called "Savethedevelopers.org" a site now gone. I've just put it back up so you can see it in action if you visit my site www.reverbstudios.ie in IE 6.0.
If anyone wants the script its here - http://www.reverbstudios.ie/scripts/say.no.to.ie.6.js

How about "use Firefox - it's free and will get you laid"?
ps. No markup allowed on IGO - yeuch!!

Just had a look at the analytics of one of the bigger sites we look after and we're still getting 25% of visits from IE6 - it's very hard to get people to shift.
04 Mar 12:02
Yeh, I'm still getting 25% from IE6 and 27% on 1024 x 768 resolution which also annoys me! We still need to prompt them to shift or upgrade, the windows update balloon seems to be ignored a lot!

U2 have an interesting and all encompassing message on their newly designed site. Also istockphoto have recently announced they will stop supporting IE6 from next year. This is the message they are using.
"Starting in 2010, iStock will begin phasing out support for Internet Explorer 6 or lower. Why? Other than PC World Magazine ranking in the 8th worst tech product of all time, here's our top 5 reasons to upgrade:
1. Security continues to be an issue with this legacy browser. We want people browsing to be safe!
2. It's slow. Too slow. It's orders of magnitude slower than modern, efficient browsers.
3. It's non-standards compliant. This means our developers have to develop an almost completely different version of iStock to run on it.
4. It doesn't properly support cool new functionality that you are asking for, and we want to deliver.
5. Alternatives are free, fast and easy to download:
* Internet Explorer 7
* Internet Explorer 8 R.C. 1
* Firefox 3
* Safari 3.2
* Google Chrome
Neglecting to upgrade your software is like choosing to face the enemy with a cardboard shield and a paper sword when you could have the latest Kevlar™ vest and ray gun. Just upgrade already!"
Hope this helps
