Gardens are much more than simply a venue for decorating. They're not only a simple hobby either. Horticulture can be a meditative activity, one that cements your appreciation of life. One that even instills the gardener with a sense of peace and tranquility. The dividends you yield are considerable, in particular when you mature into a great gardener.
Turn the handles of your garden tools into measuring rulers. Large handled tools like rakes, hoes or shovels may be used like measuring sticks. Lay the handles of said tools on the ground where it's flat and there is no interference, such as gravel. Stretch a measuring tape along one side. Paying close attention to the measurements, use a black marker to establish each interval along the handle’s side in a clearly visible manner. When you're horticulture next, you’ll have a ruler besides you at all times.
A garden with a foundation of healthy soil is the best defence against pests. If you're producing healthy plants, they'll be stronger and better able to resist bugs and diseases. To boost your garden’s prospects of giving you the healthiest possible plants, make sure you begin with premium soil devoid of salt-accumulating chemicals.
Don’t bother with expensive chemicals if your plants start to sport powdery mildew. Mix a bit of liquid soap and some baking soda into water. Spray the mixture on the plants once every seven days or so until you no longer see the mildew. Baking soda will bring no damage to your plants. Will treat the mildew in a gentle and efficient manner.
Before you plant anything in your garden, have the soil checked. A soil analysis report can be acquired for a nominal fee. You can then use the results of that report to determine if the soil needs to be modified before you begin planting. Before you ruin any crops, make sure you do this. Soil can be analysed at a lot of cooperative extension offices. Make sure you plan accordingly.
You must protect tender, deciduous shrubs. Shrubs in pots especially need special care in the colder weather. Fasten the tops of the canes together. Cover this wigwam loosely with a cloth. This method is superior to covering plants in plastic, because air can freely circulate, which prevents rotting.
Your plants need to be kept dry. Sill receiving a good amount of air. Excess moisture creates an appealing environment for disease and parasites. Fungi is the most common parasite for plants. Sprays and liquids exist that are perfect for killing the fungi. Be sure you use it on the area before the fungi actually appear.
Use the knowledge you've gained here to resuscitate your garden today. When the day comes that your plants are tall and smiling, you'll be too. If you give horticulture a chance and see it through, it can be a life changing experience. Hop to it!
