So I want to buy a Flip camcorder and do a search on Google for "buy a flip". Out of 34,300,000 search results,  (plus an ad) the very first search result is Never Buy A Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder Review.

While friends of mine have raved about the Flip and I thought it was just a matter of buying one, I am now having second thoughts.

And here's a few ways to do it...

  1. Go to http://www.google.com/alerts
  2. (You'll need a google account - takes two secs to make one)
  3. Make a new alert for your company's name
  4. Make some more for common misspellings
  5. Make some more for your competitors
  6. Make some more for indusrty related keywords
  7. Follow up on them!
  1. Go to http://search.twitter.com/
  2. Enter your company's name
  3. Do this every morning
  4. Make it a feed if you feel fancy!
  1. I've an old post about it here http://www.irishstu.com/stublog/2008/05/16/seeing-what-is-said-about-you-on-the-web/
  2. And here's some posts by the experts http://www.mulley.net/2008/05/02/how-to-listen-tomonitor-what-people-are-saying-about-your-company-online/

Thanks Stewart, I should have included some solutions and not just highlight the problem.

Thanks for this.

Of course this is what IGOpeople is all about solving too.

No problemo - I actually set some up this morning for some of our clients in work, so it was on my mind!

I forgot to mention analytics:

These are VERY easy to set up (you just need someone to stick a bit of code on your web pages)

  1. http://www.google.com/analytics/
  2. http://www.statcounter.com/
You can see who's linking to your site, which can be very useful if someone is talking about you on forums or blogs etc.

Back to the flip - we had a pretty good discussion going on IGOpeople about pocket camcorders

I was thinking about a flip myself, but one of the problems I have with most camcorders is around the sound - so I'l like an external mic'. I checked around loads and there don't seem to be any that you can plug a mic' into - so I ended up going for a Nokia N95. It has audio-in and the camcorder is as good as most pocket camcorders. It's a bit more pricey, but it's also a GPS and phone.

Google alerts is probably my favorite web app, simple as it is!

Great idea on the google alerts.  I receive google alerts every day for activity in the industry but not for monitoring my own business activity.  Thanks a million.

I'll start the twitter initiative too................
